South Koreans are found to be the world’s top buyer of pornographic materials, according to Newsweek. 

The U.S. weekly magazine said on its latest online edition that Koreans spent an average $527 per person in 2006 to watch pornography through CDs, videos and other mediums, followed by Japan’s $157 and Finland’s $114.

 Korean men are top sex tourists in Southeast Asia

While it's no shock to learn that Korean men visit prostitutes in very high numbers, it might come as a surprise that they are actually the biggest sex tourists in Southeast Asia. The Korean Institute of Criminology concluded that Korean tourists outnumber all other nationalities in terms of the frequency of their visits to prostitutes.

The institute looked at field surveys in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines which included interviews with local social workers and neighbors, arrest records at local police stations and a tally of tourists who frequent bars linked to prostitution. The numbers clearly indicate that Korean men frequent these establishments more than Japanese, Chinese and even Thai tourists.

The U.S. State Department's annual report on human trafficking also confirms that Korean men are the main client for child prostitutes in Southeast Asia and Pacific islands. There is speculation as to why Korean men engage in this type of crime more than others. Some point to a lack of guilt while others assert that due to the large amount of Korean business opportunities in Southeast Asia, wealthier Korean men are far more common in the region and that is what is skewing the numbers.

In South Korea, the laws of the nation follow the citizen no matter where they are in the world. There have been numerous cases of Koreans being arrested in South Korea for using illegal drugs oversees, so it is perplexing as to why the country has not taken a single step to curb the rise in sex tourism and the engagement in child prostitution.

◆성인남성 56.7% 성매매 경험= 한국갤럽이 지난달 31일부터 지난 2일까지 3일 동안 전국 성인 1천11명에게 2004년부터 시행된 성매매 특별법으로 성매매가 줄었다고 보는지를 물은 결과, 70%는 '줄지 않았다', 15%만이 '줄었다'고 답했고 15%는 의견을 유보했다. 성과 나이 등 모든 응답자의 특성을 따져도 '줄지 않았다'는 응답이 더 많아 성매매 특별법 시행의 효과를 부정적으로 인식했다.

또 여성가족부가 2013년 5월부터 지난해 1월까지 일반 성인남성 1천200명을 대상으로 설문 조사한 결과, 56.7%의 남성이 성 구매 경험이 있었고, 27.2%가 최근 1년 동안 성 구매 경험이 있는 것으로 나타났다.

미국 15~18%, 네덜란드 16%

다른 나라의 남성은 어떨까. ‘성매수 실태조사 보고서’를 보면, 미국에서의 최근 조사(2006 일반사회여론조사(General Social Survey))는 2006년에 진행됐다. 미국 남성은 최근 1년 동안 4%의 성매수 경험이 있고, 평생 동안의 성매수 경험은 15~18%로 조사됐다. 우리와 비교할 때 10분의 1 규모다. 일부 연구는 집단 표본에 대한 추적조사를 해보니 60%가 넘는 수가 일생 동안 성매수를 경험한다고 밝히기는 했으나 우리의 조사 결과와 방법적 차원에서 비교할 수 있는 것은 2006년의 자료다. 심지어 합법적으로 성매매가 가능한 오스트레일리아(16%)나 네덜란드(16%)도 수치가 우리의 절반을 밑돈다. 영국과 뉴질랜드는 7%에 불과했다. 전세계적으로 우리와 비교가 가능한 곳은 짐바브웨 정도로 53%다.

성 앞에만 서면 이성을 잃어가는 대한민국 남성에게 적절한 처방전은 없을까. 보고서는 청소년기 교육만이 양성평등 인식을 길러줄 수 있다고 조언한다. 징벌적 차원을 넘어 근본적인 인식 전환이 필요하다는, 멀고도 어려운 얘기다. 당장 연말이 다가온다. 셀 수 없이 많은 ‘확신범’이 1조2907억원을 들고 비열한 밤거리를 누빌 것이다.

국세청에 의하면 2012년 대한민국의 유흥업소는 자그마치 24,295개에 이른다. 이는 국내 대형 커피전문점인 카페베네, 스타벅스, 이디야, 엔제리너스 등의 매장을 모두 합친 것보다 10배 가까이 많은 숫자이다. (룸싸롱,가요방,안마방 기타 변종업소 모두 합친 통계)

 

대구지역 성매매 업소의 수가 커피숍이 포함된 휴게음식점보다 많은 것으로 조사됐다.

동남아시아와 아프리카 등 제3세계 국가들의 빈민가에선 아직도 어린아이들이 성노예로 팔리고 있다. 굶을 만큼 빈곤하거나 병에 걸리거나 빚독촉을 받거나 알코올중독에 걸린 부모에 의해서다.

 “동남아시아에 가서 아동 성매매를 하는 외국인 가운데 24%가 미국인, 26%가 한국인이라고 한다.한국인이 가장 많다. 낮에는 골프를 치거나 비즈니스를 하고 밤에는 아동 섹스관광을 하고 있다. 그들이 바로 당신들의 딸일 수도 있다. 너무 마음이 아프다. 그런 행위는 이제 그만해줄 것을 부탁드린다.”
